2024 Carolyn Hove English Horn Master Classes at Sacramento State

 

The School of Music at California State University, Sacramento is proud to host the

return of the Carolyn Hove English Horn Master Classes!

​

Event: June 24-28, 2024

California State University, Sacramento, Capistrano Hall

​

Join us for five days of classes in orchestral and solo literature, small group reed--making

sessions, tips on choosing equipment and taking orchestral auditions.

​

Our event is limited to 20 Performers ** but an unlimited number of Auditors** may attend.

 

The week also includes oboe and English horn repair and maintenance classes with Mark

Chudnow, our special guest-in-residence. 

​

Monday, June 24, 2024 - Carolyn Hove Opening Recital, 7:00pm, Capistrano Concert Hall

Friday, June 28, 2024 - Performer's Closing Recital, time TBD, Capistrano Concert Hall

Who Can Attend:

 

* Performers: Adults, age 18 years and older, from all experience levels are invited to

apply. After reviewing all Applications, Performers will be chosen based on their goals and

experience level. Class size is limited to 20 Performers. Performers will play for Ms. Hove

during masterclass sessions (orchestral literature and solo literature), receive individual attention

during the small group reed making sessions, rehearse with an accompanist, and participate in

the Closing Recital. Three courses on Oboe and English horn Adjustment given by Mark

Chudnow are also included.

** Auditors must be at lest 18 years of age in order to apply, unless they have received special

permission by the host. Auditors may attend and observe all masterclasses, the three courses on

Oboe and English horn Adjustment given by Mark Chudnow, but do not perform or actively

participate in discussions during the week. An unlimited number of Auditors may apply and

attend. 5-Day Auditors and Daily Auditors are equally welcome to attend.

The Opening and Closing Recitals are open to the public and everyone is encouraged to

attend. The Carolyn Hove Opening Recital on Monday, June 24, 2024 is a ticketed event - all

 

English Horn Master Classes Performers and 5-Day Auditors receive free admission. The

Performer's Closing Recital on June 28, 2024 is free of charge. 

 

 

Application Information

Application: February 15, 2024. 

 - Early Application is encouraged for those seeking to participate as a Performer, space is

limited to 20.

​

Early Application for Performer Deadline: April 15, 2024, 11:59pm, PDT

​

Early Applicants will receive notification of their acceptance status by April 22, 2024.

​

If space allows, Applications for Performers will remain open after April 15, 2024 - but

will close on May 15, 2024.

​

Application for Performer Final Deadline: May 15, 2024, 11:59pm, PDT (if space allows).

Applicants will receive notification of their acceptance status by May 20th, 2024.

​

Application and Registration for Auditor Only Final Deadline: June 10, 2024. 

Please be mindful that if you are relying on Campus Housing options, you must Apply and

Register by June 3, 2024 due to our University Housing deadlines. Do not delay your

Application and Registration as an Auditor if you require On-Campus or Off-Campus Housing

options, FYI.

Performers should indicate their top three orchestral excerpt choices for masterclass. Each Performer will then be assigned one excerpt.

 

Performers should indicate their top three solo literature choices, including specific movement or section, for masterclass and recital. Each Performer will then be assigned a movement or section.

Registration Fees...

​

Early Application Performer Fee: $700 (Apply on or before April 15th)

Performer Fee: $725 (Apply on or after April 16th)

Auditor 5-day Fee: $500 (includes Carolyn Hove Recital on June 24th)

Auditor Single-day Fee: $125 per chosen day

 

Applications for Performers must pay a $150 deposit which will be applied towards Registration. This fee is non-refundable after June 1, 2024. Applicants will be notified of deposits, Registration Fees, and payment deadlines upon class acceptance status. 

 

On-line final Registration through the Bursar's Office at CSUS takes credit card payments. All

fees are non-refundable after June 1, 2024. Performers and Auditors may cancel and obtain a

refund until June 1, 2024 by written request. There is a processing fee of $50 for each

cancellation.

 

University Housing - Staying on Campus for the Event

Riverview Hall, named for its views of the American River, features several amenities,

including a fitness center, study lounges, computer lab, laundry room, community, and classroom

space for events. 

Single and Double occupancy rooms at Riverview Hall are available for our event, although

space is limited. See photos of rooms and shared restroom facilities here. When completing

final Registration, you will have the option of reserving University Housing. 

The Servery at the Dining Commons, our University Housing meal plan option, can be

viewed here - Summer 2024 details will be updated as we near the date of the event.

Sacramento State On-Campus Eateries can be viewed here - Summer 2024 offerings and hours

will be updated as we near the date of the event.

If you desire to be close to Capistrano Hall (our Music Building) and stay within walking

distance, I recommend choosing the University Housing option. It is a 10 minute walk

through our beautiful tree-filled campus between Riverview Hall and Capistrano Hall, with a

Starbucks en route. See walking route below or view the official CSUS Campus Map.

University Housing Rates

The rates listed below include a 5 night stay with check-in on Monday, June 24th and check-

out on Saturday, June 29th AM. The rates also include linens.

ï‚· Single occupancy rooms: $225 for 5 night stay (very limited).

ï‚· Double occupancy rooms: $162.50 per person for 5 night stay.

 

Off-Campus Housing Options

Home2 Suites by Hilton Sacramento at CSUS has offered a group rate reservation for our

event under the name, Carolyn Hove English Horn Master Classes. The rooms are typical hotel

style rooms. Single occupancy hotel-style rooms have been requested under our group

reservation - if you prefer a double occupancy, don't hesitate to ask, they have been very helpful.

It is recommended that you make your reservations as soon as possible, if this is your

preference. 

 

IMPORTANT: reservations at Home2 Suites by Hilton Sacramento at CSUS must be

made on your own and must be reserved by May 24th to be considered under the group

rate.

The Home2 Suites location on 65th Avenue is approximately 7 minutes by car, from

Capistrano Hall. Free breakfast and free wifi. Be advised there is a parking fee at the hotel. It is

not recommended to rely on walking between Capistrano Hall and most Off-Campus Housing

options unless choosing to walk with a partner or group, an approximate 23-25 minute walk from

any of the following close locations: Home2 Suites by Hilton Sacramento & CSUS, Larkspur

Landing Sacramento, Comfort Inn & Suites Sacramento – University Area, Hampton Inn &

Suites CSUS.

 

Parking on Campus

Weekly parking permits for the University Housing areas are available for purchase, if you are in

need. At time of publication, these permits will also be honored at Parking Structure 1,

conveniently located at Capistrano Hall, and can be purchased when completing Registration.

Weekly permits for Parking Structure 1 can be purchased online (virtual, monitored by license

plate). You will need to sign-up as a Guest and purchase a virtual permit.

Daily Parking permit options require the use of a Permit Machine. The Permit Machine for

Parking Structure 1 can be found on the 1st and 5th floor and accepts credit card payment.
